San Antonio Is A Caring Place To Live

Image title    Want to live in a big-hearted community that shows generosity and kindness?  San Antonio is the place for you. In the on-line yellow pages under San Antonio, there are 1260 listings for nonprofits in the area. Among these are seven nonprofit organizations that have been awarded a Four-Star charity rating, according to Charity Navigator. What better place to live, work, and raise a family? 

     Funding for charities comes from citizens of San Antonio, churches, local businesses, foundations, the government, and other civic groups. Neighbors pull together to see that basic needs of the disadvantaged are met. According to the San Antonio Express News, in 2014, the San Antonio Food Bank provided 75 million meals. Numerous food bank drive organizers, local growers, distributors, and restaurants donated more than 62 million pounds - $100 million in food and grocery products. 

Across from the 104,000-square-foot warehouse is a 25-acre community garden where volunteers harvest crops as well. 

     Another highlighted charity in the Express News is Therapy Animals of San Antonio (TASA). This nonprofit group brings people and animals together. Volunteers train pets and then take them around to hospitals, nursing homes, and shelters. In addition, they also make presentations at schools, civic groups and other places to educate the community about how helpful therapy animals can be to lift people’s spirits.

Help Lonely Seniors with Christian Senior Services  13420 Nacogdoches Rd

Somewhere near you there is a senior who is lonely and who rarely leaves their home. Being isolated often causes depression. A visit makes all the difference.

Jingle Bell run/walk: Valero Energy’s headquarters, 1 Valero Way, 210-380-8171, Wear your holiday-themed spirit wear and bells and run or walk a mile or 5K for the Arthritis Foundation. Fundraising event also includes live music, a kid’s/senior/dog zones and more. $18-$40. 3 p.m. Dec. 13.

Opportunities for teens, ages 16+

Volunteers fill the bags on each Thursday evening prior to placing them in the early morning each Friday and Saturday morning until Christmas week.  (40) Volunteers are needed each Friday and Saturday night to light the candles. There are over 4000 luminaries to be placed and lighted.

Angel Tree Toy Shop Helper

Opportunities for teens, ages 15+

The Salvation Army needs volunteers to help set up the Toy Shop for distribution and sort and pack donated gifts for specific children. December 7 – December 18, Monday-Saturday from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
